Carbon planning

Upfront carbon is the carbon emissions caused during manufacture and transport of building products.

Cost Group have the capability to calculate the cost associated with reducing the upfront carbon of a project before construction begins.

Our approach

Cost Group provides carbon plans that works hand-in-hand with the cost plan.

The building sector is responsible for up to 40% of the global energy used and as much as one-third of the global Green House Gas emissions.

To help our clients achieve Greenstar ratings, demonstrate carbon neutral credentials and environmental governance, Cost Group provides embodied carbon comparisons. This means in addition to considering the capital and operational impacts, we can advise the embodied carbon impact of design alternatives. Importantly, carbon comparisons can be undertaken during the early design phases when design decisions will have the greatest influence on amount of embodied carbon.

Cost Group efficiently delivers this service as we have built our pricing database to include carbon factors which enables concurrent capital cost and embodied carbon calculations.

Examples where this methodology can significantly influence the volume of embodied carbon include:

  • Structural design options
(eg; Concrete versus low carbon concrete, steel versus timber)

  • Re-use and refurbishment of existing structure

  • Alternate mechanical services refrigerant gas

  • Floor finishes (eg; vinyl, marmoleum, or cork)

Our carbon planning service will predict cost, reduce risk and provide certainty.
